Peru – Colca Canyon Area

September 22nd, 2012

From Arequipa we made our way to the Colca Canyon area, first Chivay and then Puno. Here we are at the highest point, 15,967 feet.

Colca Canyon itself is the deepest in the world. We went to see the condors but I found this cross instead.

Both Chivay and Puno are above 12,000 feet and by the time we got to an island in Lake Titicaca, at around 12,500 I was on oxygen. I can report that Lake Titicaca is beautiful but have no photos to document it. We discussed leaving for a lower altitude but by the next morning I was somewhat better so we decided to forge ahead to Lampa, a small village with a fascinating church, La Iglesia Santiago Apostol. Loved seeing a bicycle parked below one of the stations of the cross and imagined someone doing the stations on the bicycle.

But the highlight of the church was an authorized replica of the pieta mounted on a giant marble sphere.
